MARIETTA, Ohio — The downturn in the economy continues to take its toll in southeast Ohio.

Solvay Advanced Polymers is one of a handful of plants along Route 7 in Marietta forced to cut its workforce because of the sluggish economy.

Twenty-three workers out of 250 at the specialty plastics facility will be out of a job come next Tuesday.

Plant manager Wally Kandel said if and when the economy improves, there's not a good chance that the laid off workers will be brought back.

Thirteen hourly and 10 salaried jobs will go. Many positions have been held by workers for decades.

Solvay is an international company. They will cut another 26 jobs nationwide.

The company said the demand for their product isn't what it used to be.

Kandel said Solvay offered voluntary severance packages to workers last week. Whoever is let go will also get help finding a new job or training.

If volunteers don't come forth to leave the company, then management will make the decision of who stays and who goes.
