CINCINNATI, Ohio — As military officials try to figure out why one of their own went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, many Muslims here in Ohio fear backlash from the actions of Major Nidal Hasan.

One member of the Islamic Association of Cincinnati said Hasan's actions shouldn't reflect on the entire Muslim community.

"Absolutely horrified that so many innocent lives would be taken without cause," said Islamic Association of Cincinnati spokesperson Karen Dabdoub.

Soldiers don't expect to see gunfire before they leave American soil.

"Guys are getting killed overseas every day. To get killed at home, where they think it's a safe haven is just tragic," said Kevin Kennedy of Cincinnati.

Military officials said Hasan survived and is in the hospital. Police said he went on a shooting spree at Fort Hood, which left at least 13 people dead and 30 more wounded.

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to the families of the victims, to the victims themselves" said Dabdoub.

Reports show Hasan was born in Virginia and is a devout Muslim. Some in the Islamic community fear backlash from other Americans because of Hasan's faith.

"The American-Muslim community totally condemns those kinds of actions and the Koran, as a matter of fact is very specific, and says that if you take one innocent life god considers it as if you have taken the lives of all of humanity. So it's a very, very serious and grave thing to do," said Dabdoub.

Dabdoub said Islam is a peaceful religion no matter what some may believe.

"The word Islam itself comes from the word Salem which means peace," she explained.

After listening to talk radio and reading online comments after the shooting, you realize there are many Americans who don't trust Muslims. Some even hate them just because of their religion.

"It really is not fair for us to make those connections until we find out exactly what his motivations were," said Dabdoub.

Americans of different faiths agree.

"It's definitely wrong. Just cause he's Muslim doesn't mean he's a terrorist. There's plenty of good Muslim people out there," said Eric Ryan of Cincinnati.

"Not all Muslims are terrorists obviously. You shouldn't retaliate against other people just because this one guy did something. That's silly," agreed Ricky Simpson, also of Cincinnati.
