Family members said 22-year-old Kimberly Young died from complications of the H1N1 flu early Wednesday morning.
Young graduated from Miami University in December and had been living in Oxford. She would have turned 23 this weekend.
Health officials have yet to confirm that this is an H1N1 related death. However, word of Young's death has many concerned on the Miami University Campus.
Friends called her "Kimi." The Miami alumna worked three jobs while in school. Young graduated December 2008 with Bachelor's degrees in both International Studies and Fine Art.
"I love her, and I really firmly believe that she's with the lord," said long time friend Kelly Sharpe.
Sharpe said that Young was a hard worker and had a strong passion for helping others.
"When the power was out last year, she built a bon fire in her backyard and just started cooking food over the bon fire, for like a week and just walked down the street and would just find people and invite them to come. She would be like, 'Hey! Do you have dinner? No you don't, you don't have electricity. Come to my house! I'll feed you. We have spaghetti over the fire,'" Sharpe remembered.
Co-workers at Kofenya, the coffee shop where Young worked for the past four years, displayed photos of their friend.
Sharpe said she'll miss Young's vibrant personality.
"The music would be playing and maybe no one would be in the coffee shop, and she'd be behind the counter just dancing to herself or talking to people. She was really engaging. I think everybody just has a first time they met Kimi story," Sharpe said.
Those who didn't know Young said her death is a big wake up call. Many didn't think the H1N1 virus was a big deal.
"[I'm] kind of shocked because supposedly there haven't been that many deaths of kids our age. Now it's a little bit more serious obviously," Miami Junior Haley Von Schriltz said.
She said hundreds of students have been infected with the H1N1 flu virus, but she never thought one of them would actually die from it.
"It's just a tragic story and it's really sad. Hopefully it won't happen anywhere else," Von Schriltz said.
Young's funeral is Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Brethren in Wayne.
