Investigators say Kathy Beutler stole anywhere between $100,000 and $500,000.

Kathy Beutler admitted to stealing at least $100,000 from the Ohio Farmer's Union in Ottawa, where she worked as treasurer. The organization represents more than 300,000 family farmers nationwide.

Putnam County Sheriff Jim Beutler said his wife stole the money, over four years, to pay off her credit card debt that spiraled out of control.

"Wow. It just about floored me because of who I am and because she's really a good person," Jim Beutler said.

Investigators found Kathy Beutler made 86 unauthorized deposits of Ohio Farmer's Union money into a personal account she shares with her husband.

The sheriff, who is also the president of the Buckeye Sheriff's Association, said he thought she had gotten her debt straightened out, legally, years ago.

"I had no idea it existed. People find that hard to believe," Jim Beutler said. "It was a joint bank account because I didn't use it. I had my own bank account."

Jim Beutler said his wife paid the family bills and that she didn't shop extravagantly. He blames her crime, in part, on plastic.

"She had credit cards with rates of 28 to 29 percent. You can't keep up with them," he said.

Kathy Beutler's stealing not only affected her and her family, but also her coworkers at the Ohio Farmer's Union.

Seven employees faced furloughs because the organization was short on money.

The Ohio Farm's insurance company is working to recoup lost funds.

Kathy Beutler's sentencing is set for Dec. 1.

In addition to a possible five years in prison, Kathy Beutler also faces five years of probation and having to pay restitution. She is out of jail on bond.
