OU Fights 'Party School' Image After Student's Death

ATHENS, Ohio — Officials at Ohio University are trying to fix the educational institution's reputation as a "party school" after a student died from a fall off a second-story balcony.

Matt Smith, 19, fell off the balcony late Saturday night at an off-campus house where a party was being held, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

Police told 10TV they were waiting on toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol was a factor in Smith's death, but friends said Smith had been drinking at the party and earlier in the day.

Smith's death comes on the heels of another fatal fall by an Ohio University student in April. Drugs were found in that student's system.

"Our first and foremost concern here is students' safety and their well-being," said Ryan Lombardi, the university's dean of students.

Lombardi is familiar with the university's reputation as a school where education and excess go hand in hand, an image reinforced by Monday's release of a survey by the Princeton Review, ranking Ohio University as the No. 5 "party school" in the country.

Lombardi told 10TV News he questions the accuracy of the ranking, but he said the school is taking an aggressive approach to alcohol use.

"Right now, we have a two strike policy here at OU," Lombardi said. "A student who has a first alcohol offense might be put on probation. But a second alcohol offense, and they're automatically suspended."

At freshman orientation on Monday, the topic was addressed with students and parents.

Karen Shiffman told 10TV News she had no misgivings about her daughter attending Ohio University.

"No matter where they go, they're going have to make decisions about whether they're going partake or not," Shiffman said.

Senior Ashlee Reynolds said losing a fellow student to an alcohol-related accident her freshman year changed her perspective forever.

"It's really terrible to watch someone that had a bright future lose it over something stupid," Reynolds said.
