"We are building a butterfly garden for the environment and for people to see," said camper Capria Hall.
Muskingum County kids learn about conservation.
Muskingum County Soil and Water Conservation District's education specialist Nicole Hafer said,"If we want our children to have a good appreciation for conservation of all of our natural resources, the best way to do that is to get them hands on involved."
That task of getting students involved is left to Hafer. She leads the charges and shows the campers how to build the butterfly garden.
"You take a group of kids that have an interest in conservation anyway and then you just kind of feed into that," adds Hafer.
The students gobble up knowledge every week during the summer. Each Monday brings a new project. In addition to digging, campers gather rocks in the creek to decorate their masterpiece. Campers get down and dirty while enjoying a few of their favorite things like, "...animals, being outdoors, and fresh air," according to Erica Mawhorr.
This summer of fun and learning often keeps kids coming back for more. Capria Hall is one of the campers returning from last summer. "This is actually my second year and it's been really fun. We just do a whole bunch of stuff on the environment," she said.
After a day of fun in the sun and learning, one thing is certain. Hall remarks, "This is a lot more fun than school."
