Glenda Moss of Piqua said she was sleeping in a recliner in the living room when Jeter, a 5-year-old Great Pyrenees, jumped in her face Thursday morning. Moss said she smelled smoke and ran down the hall to get her 19-year-old son.

All three fled the home, but for some reason Jeter ran back inside. Moss went back in to find the animal but had to come back out because of the smoke.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Rindler said the family was lucky. He said the house didn't have smoke detectors, and the smoke likely would have been deadly if not for the dog alerting its owners.

A cause of the fire is under investigation.
