Cincinnati, Ohio — In order to compete in the workforce, Cincinnati State Community College student Jeff Heeney said he has to take classes that will train him for the renewable energy industry.

"I just have a feeling without background in renewable won't be able to continue on," said Heeney.

Experts at the Energy Conference in Cincinnati said that path certainly won't hurt your chances of landing a high-paying job in the U.S.

"It's a field that can't be outsourced. These are jobs that are going to be domestic. A career for life using tech available to man today be involved in new technology on board," said Raymond Miller, Energy Conference Chairman.

University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Community College sponsored Thursday's event. Professors said education and training are important, but a four-year degree is not necessary.

"Apprenticeship program or two year certificate there will be programs all the way up to Ph.D.," said University of Cincinnati Assistant Dean Cheryl Brueggeman.

Brueggeman said while California may lead the nation in renewable energy, Ohio isn't far behind. She said the state is at the top in the midwest in green energy.

"Mostly the capacity of our governor looking at what renewable energy can do not only for the state but also internal component that builds economy," said Brueggeman.
