CINCINNATI, Ohio — "It's the freedom plus it's nice out," said motorcycle rider Dennie Jackson.

But that's not the only reason there are more motorcycles out on the roads this season.

"Fuel impacting the state of Ohio and nation, cost very high and motorcycles typically get between 45 and 60 miles per gallon," said James Hutchinson, Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Jackson just got his permit and has been riding for the past two weeks. Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say new riders need to constantly watch what's going on around them.

"More importantly pay attention to the physical movement of driver inside vehicle," said Hutchinson

And drivers need to pay extra attention around bikers.

"Look in their blind spot, most motorcycles are small, will hide very well," Hutchinson added.

According to statistics from the state highway patrol there were nearly 40 more deadly motorcycle crashes between 2005 to 2007 compared to 2002 to 2004," reported ONN's Lot Tan.

That's why Trooper Hutchinson says a biker's first priority should be to protect their head.

Jackson always wears a helmet because he had a friend who was saved by wearing one in a recent motorcycle accident.

Hopefully other riders get the same message.
