COLUMBUS, Ohio — State lawmakers on Tuesday were taking a closer look at high school athletics and injuries.

Concussions were the main focus of hearings held at the Ohio Statehouse, 10TV News reported.

Concussions are a growing problem among athletes.  Medical experts said as many as 40 percent of high school athletes suffer a concussion, and many return to sports sooner than they should.

Ohio High School Athletic Association Commissioner Dan Ross said new national guidelines are aimed at preventing problems.

"If you're diagnosed with a concussion you will not be able to return to the game that same day and you have to be cleared by appropriate medical personnel," Ross said.

Ross testified at the Statehouse and said appropriate medical personnel means students should be checked out by a doctor or trainer with experience dealing with concussions.
