The incident occurred on Monday at Columbus State Community College's Davidson Hall, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.
"Students were more or less startled or just kind of surprised an elevator ride for three flights was not so straightforward," said Jonathan Baker, the college's mathematics chair.
The woman, who requested anonymity, was transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital for a knee injury, her family members said.
"The student, who says she was apparently hurt in some way, never reported to us that there was a problem with the elevator or that she had this alleged injury, so we didn't know about it," said Columbus State spokesman David Wayne.
The elevator was shut down over a period of two days, Mallett reported.
"It was taken out of service this week because we were checking on it after we found out from you there might be a problem, so we took it out of service to take another look at it," Wayne said.
10TV News obtained the maintenance checks performed on the elevator and they showed maintenance was performed twice a week on it and no problems were reported.
The Ohio Department of Commerce performs the inspections on the elevator and told 10TV News that it was installed in 1997 and was last inspected in December. There was one minor violation for an oil contaminant bucket but there were no issues with the unit and no accident reports submitted.
The elevator at Columbus state was manufactured and is serviced by Otis Elevator. The company also manufactured and service a dormitory elevator involved in an accident at The Ohio State University in which a student was killed.
The alleged incident at Columbus State did not come close to a person's death and Columbus State wants to keep it that way, Mallett reported.
"We are standing back to let them do their job and they will report back to us if they find a problem or if they don't find a problem we will know either way," Wayne said.
Late Friday afternoon, Otis Elevator released a statement to 10TV about the incident.
"It is our understanding that the elevator stopped suddenly," the statement read. "It did not fall. The abrupt stop may have given the passenger the impression that the elevator fell."
