COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mayor Michael Coleman said Friday that he wants the city to take another look at Columbus' parking meter policy.

The policy, which went into effect on Nov. 30, came under heated criticism from residents at Monday's City Council meeting, 10TV's Cara Connelly reported.

Part of the policy included an increase in parking meter fees citywide.

The city recently raised parking rates by 50 percent to help pay for the new meters.

10TV News obtained a memo from Coleman to Mark Kelsey, the director of the city's Department of Public Service that charged the department with putting together a group of city officials and citizens to examine the policy.

Coleman said that the city must look at meter locations, operations, pricing and enforcement.

The meter fee increase will allow the city to install new solar-powered digital meters that offer the option of debit and credit card use.  It allows the city to create funding for a 500-room downtown convention hotel.
