Shelter Needs Donations After Dog Deaths

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio — The Humane Society Serving Logan County is asking the public for help after several dogs died from a bacterial disease, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported Thursday.

Necropsies showed that the dogs had streptococcus, a form of strep that apparently can cause hemorrhagic pneumonia in canines.

The animals were then placed into quarantine, Kocot reported.

Since the humane society is an open intake shelter, workers are contacting surrounding animal shelters to see if any of them can take in dogs and cats from the public while they are quarantined.

They are also seeking donations so that they can open a temporary, offsite facility to continue accepting dogs and cats without risking their exposure to the other dogs that are currently in their facility.

According to the humane society, it also desperately needs donations to cover medical supplies and medications for the 175 dogs and cats currently in their care and to cover the cost of the extra staffing needed to monitor the pets' treatment and care.
