Ohio State Testing New Diabetes Drug

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Doctors at the Ohio State Medical Center recognize that diabetes is a growing epidemic and are working to fight it, 10TV's Andrea Cambern reported.

November is National Diabetes Awareness month and a study going on at Ohio State could mean big improvements for those living with diabetes.

Johnathon Lammers is a doctor, but even he did not recognize the warning signs of type1 diabetes.

"I was more tired than I usually would be," Lammers said.

Lammers was diagnosed with the disease a few months ago and is now one of the patients in a study to test a new diabetes treatment.

"To reduce the long term complications is the biggest thing," said Dr. Kathleen Dungan, one of the physicians running the study. "We can prevent the need for complete insulin dependence and all of the complications that go along with that."

The study requires patients receive the trial medication for eight days in a row.

It is a commitment, but one that Lammers is happy to make - his daughter also has type 1 diabetes.

He said even if the research does not help him, the strides Dr. Dungan makes could make a difference for his daughter.
