COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus church has stepped up in the battle against hunger in central Ohio.

Brice United Methodist Church decided to step in and help central Ohio food banks that are struggling to keep shelves stocked.

The church opened its own food pantry last week after noticing a growing need within the congregation, 10TV's Lindsey Seavert reported.

"I have a Masters in business and a Bachelor's in accounting and I lost my job over a year ago," churchgoer Brandee Wheeler said.  "I want to work I try everyday to find a job, I can't."

As church treasurer, Wheeler helped found the food pantry.  Now, she's shopping there too.

"Hunger doesn't have a poster child because just as quick as you rose to the top, it can be taken away," Wheeler said.

Food pantry founders hope to help those in need in the congregation and in the surrounding community.

"I think our food pantry can make a difference just by being in existence," Brice Church Food Pantry Director Wayne Daugherty said.

The Brice Food Pantry hopes to serve people in a three mile radius of the Brice Road church.  The food pantry is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.
