COLUMBUS, Ohio — An 8-year-old boy was pushed out of a car when a man jumped inside and stole it Tuesday morning, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported.

The theft occurred shortly before 9 a.m. near Fair Avenue Elementary School, located on Fair Avenue on the city's east side.

Sabrina Gonzalez was dropping her daughter off at the school and left her purse, keys and stepson in her Chevrolet Lumina.

That's when a man got inside the car and told the boy to get out.  When the boy tried, he became tangled in the seat belt, prompting the man to push him out of the car.

"He tried to get out but the seat belt was stuck around him.  And when he fell on the ground the guy just pulled his legs out of the seat belt and he tried to steady himself on the car, and he almost ran him over trying to get out," Gonzalez said.

The boy was not hurt.

"I'm glad that he did pull my stepson out of the car," Gonzalez said.  "It probably would have ended ugly for him if he wouldn't have."

"She was pretty hysterical," said Ron Burk, who was dropping off his son just after the carjacking. "To say I absolutely have never done that would be false.  You would think that your child, your car - particularly at an elementary school type setting, we'd be safe."

Gonzalez said her car is a 1995 blue Chevrolet Lumina, with a Buckeye necklace and white baby shoes hanging from the rear view mirror.

She said there is duct tape on the rear passenger side, and a noticeable dent in the diver side back door.

The car has Ohio license plate number EVZ-2907.

From now on Gonzalez said she will change her habits.

"I will take my purse, keys, everything, kids all that.  Nobody will be left in the car," Gonzalez said.
