WHITEHALL, Ohio — A new project started on Monday, at the Defense Supply Center, 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.

The DSCC will be the site of a $56.8-million investment by the Ohio National Guard.

A training center and a massive shop to maintain equipment are among the upgrades.

The plans were unveiled at a groundbreaking ceremony at the DSCC.

Lawmakers and military leaders said the three new facilities will give soldiers modernized facilities, classrooms, and world-class training.

"One of the units is in Iraq now.  When they come back home they'll be coming in to a brand new facility.  And it's huge for our soldiers - absolutely huge," said Maj. Gen. Gregory Wayt.

And it also represents an investment in the city of Whitehall.

"The community will benefit from the personnel that will be coming out and shopping in some of our stores and everything," said Whitehall Mayor Jon Wolfe. "We're just glad to have them here. And they're going out in the community and spending their dollars at our businesses."

This 24-point, $4 million shop will be used for equipment maintenance.

A new 70,000-square-foot warehouse will better distribute soldiers' supplies and a $23 million training facility will also be built too.

All work is scheduled to be completed by September 2011.
