COLUMBUS, Ohio — Crime labs across the U.S. are experiencing a backlog of DNA tests, and Columbus is among those cities with tests waiting to be run, 10 Investigates' Paul Aker reported on Monday.

The Columbus Division of Police said Monday that it has about 100 sexual assault cases caught in the backlog.

The cases have been around since July, Aker reported.

A CBS News investigation found cities with hundreds, even thousands of DNA tests waiting to be completed.

In all, some 20,000 rape kits have gone untested nationwide, CBS News reported.

CBS said there are 5,600 rape kits in Detroit that have gone untested; 5,100 in San Antonio and 3,800  in Houston.

That perspective is why local crime lab experts say our delays are better than in many other cities.

"We're in really good shape, we think, in Columbus," said crime lab spokeswoman Jami St. Clair.

The Ohio Attorney General also said their office is waiting on tests currently, with about  200 criminal cases on backlog.

City Council was expected to approve more than $200,000 Monday night to hire an additional forensic scientist to help speed up the DNA testing process.

Violent crimes, including sexual assaults, get priority.
