COLUMBUS, Ohio — Heather Pick, a wife and mother who worked at WBNS-10TV, died a year ago Saturday after a valiant battle with breast cancer.

She was 38.

It was then when we vowed to honor her legacy and continue the great work she did to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

Within months of her death, Pick's impact was evidenced in a profound way.

"We've discovered more breast cancers - young women, women in their early 30s, 31-35 (years old) - than I have ever seen before in my practice and I think that's because of Heather," said Dr. Mary Pat Borges, a radiologist at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

All three hospital systems in central Ohio reported a spike in the number of patients scheduling mammograms, 10TV's Jerry Revish reported.

"She reminds everyone that this is real," said Shellie Wheeler, who decided to have a mammogram.  "These are some things that you need to do and it's really important."

Others realized the importance of keeping the fight alive.  Organizations raised money.  Others helped raise awareness about a disease that does not discriminate.

Little did Heather know that by donning a pink wig that she wore during her last appearance on 10TV that a pink wig craze would hit central Ohio in the spring.

More than 7,000 people joined Heather's Team and took to downtown streets in the annual Race For The Cure and wore pink wigs.

Last month, the Saks Key To A Cure fashion show took place. The event celebrated life, with all proceeds going to the Heather Pick Spirit Fund, helping the Columbus Cancer Clinic.

Heather Pick's spirit is alive, knowing that her fight continues to go on strong.

During her battle, Heather found that it was not easy to find the help or answers that many people wanted.

She compiled a list of resources that lists agencies to help with everything, from transportation to medical expenses, including where to go for treatment.

"The faster you find the help, the faster you can move on to enjoy life," Pick said.
