There was heavy police at both Walnut Ridge High School and Independence High School this week following a shooting involving two teenagers. On Saturday night, a 16-year-old Independence student was shot by a 16-year-old Walnut Ridge student, 10TV's Brittany Westbrook reported.
On Friday, they will be on opposing sides of the gridiron, but Thursday, one group tried to put a traditional rivalry aside for a show of unity.
"I know a lot of them and I know what kind of kids they are," said Walnut Ridge assistant coach Jesse Jackson. "They're the good kids just like these kids are."
Walnut ridge parents organized the summit where the teams could talk about positive things they are trying to accomplish.
Both teams were supposed to show up, but other than offensive coordinator Maurice Douglas, Independence High School's team was not represented. Douglas told 10TV News that was because of a miscommunication.
The game between the two teams was scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
