COLUMBUS, Ohio — Trial begins this week  for a man who allegedly played a role in a cancer scam that targeted friends and family members.

According to prosecutors, Phylip and Melanie Chen collected more than $800,000 by telling people that Phylip was dying of cancer, 10TV News reported.

Investigators said donors became suspicious after Phylip Chen did not appear ill.

Melanie Chen pleaded guilty to theft in August and will be sentenced after her husband's trial.

She faces up to 10 years in prison.

Phylip Chen has denied involvement in the case.
