Levy Failure May Impact Home Sales

Issue 2 failed on Tuesday, with 49 percent voting for the levy and 51 percent against. The defeat triggered the cancellation of all the district's sports teams and extracurricular activities, as well as the loss of more than a dozen staff members.
Kara Major's four-bedroom home has been on the market for more than 10 months and she fears that selling her house is now going to be more difficult, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

"We do feel it will affect us in a negative way as opposed to a positive way," Major said.
Even if the house sells, she believes the longer it sits on the market the harder it will be to get her asking price.
"Now we are looking at a longer span of time and people aren't going to want to pay the price," Major said.
Bonita Merz is more optimistic about her three-bedroom home that she put on the market two weeks ago.
"I think the neighborhood is so secure and I think Grove City is so secure and offers so amenities that I don't think it will have any impact," Merz said.
Experts said it is too early to tell how the levy will impact home sales, Landers reported.
Matt Perry of Trinity Homes says getting someone to buy often comes down to a couple of things.
"Usually the deal breaker is the payments, the school district and how strong of an area it is," Perry said.
As someone whose livelihood depends on home sales, Perry admitted that it's going to be tough.
"I'm concerned about it right now, my heart goes out to the whole Grove City community," Perry said.
Major and Merz continue to wait, hoping buyers will see their homes as good investments and not focus on the failed levy.
"We are optimistic that we will sell but with the levy not passing we are concerned people are not going to want to come to the community," Major said.
Realtors believe the nervousness over home sales could be short-lived, but it may depend on whether the school board decides to put another levy on the ballot in November.
