WAVERLY, Ohio — Three of the four people accused of letting rats gnaw on an infant girl pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of felony child endangering.

A judge set bond at $60,000 a piece for Todd C. Trent, 18; Joseph Gunter, 33; and his wife, Tina Gunter, 29.

Earlier this month, the girl was transported from her home in Pike County to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Doctors determined that the girl's injuries were consistent with rodent bites and that the injuries occurred over a lengthy period of time.

Relatives said the girl was recovering, despite losing two of her toes.

The 6-week-old girl's mother, Katrina Lowe, has also been charged in the case.

She faces two delinquency counts of child endangering because she was 17 when the child was injured. Prosecutors are moving to have Lowe tried as an adult because she turned 18 on Thursday.

During the court hearing on Thursday, family members of the three charged in the case appealed for lower bail. Joe Gunter's mother, Betty Carter, said her grandchildren were suffering because their parents were in jail.

"He's a good daddy and she's a good mother," Carter said. "I have two grandchildren at the house wondering when their daddy is coming home."

Carter claims that Gunters were down the hall in another bedroom and could have never heard the baby's cries.  She said Lowe and her boyfriend, Todd C. Trent, bore the responsibility for what happened.

"Nobody knows what went on in that room except the two in that room with the door closed," Carter said.

The baby remained at Nationwide Children's Hospital on Thursday, but family members said she was expected to be released to foster care in the next couple of days.
