Zack Hall took advantage of the program, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported.
Despite a beat up bumper and a taped up mirror, he received the money for his 1996 Chevrolet Blazer and drove off in a new Ford Ranger.
"I lucked out on this one," Hall said.
The program is designed to get cars with bad gas mileage off the road and replace them with new, more efficient vehicles, Hirsch reported.
"The results have been pretty magnificent," said Rhett Ricart of Ricart Automotive. "Customers are actually coming in and buying cars. There's no one looking today. They're all coming, buying cars. It's pretty exciting."
Ricart said that the program seems to help the struggling U.S. auto industry.
Some of the requirements your clunker has to meet include being built less than 25 years before you trade it in. It has to have a new, combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less. It must be drivable and there must be proof it was insured and registered to the same owner for one year prior to the trade-in.
