Patrol Investigating Fatal Hit-Skip Crash

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio —
A hit-skip crash near
Indian
Lake
in
Logan
County
left one pedestrian dead and another critically injured early
Saturday.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was investigating the crash on state Route
366 in
Stokes
Township
, south of
Indian
Lake
. At
1:33 a.m.
, a blue, four-door car hit Jeffrey S. Gates, 48, and Virgil S. Gates,
24, both of Port Jefferson in
Shelby
County
.
The car hit the men as they crossed S.R. 366 then fled south on S.R.
235, according to the patrol. Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff's Office assisted at the
scene.
Indian
Lake
EMS
responded to the crash. The Logan County Coroner pronounced Jeffrey
Gates dead at the scene. A MedFlight helicopter transported Virgil Gates to
Grant
Medical
Center
in
Columbus
with critical injuries. The hospital was not releasing information
regarding his condition Saturday night.
A crash reconstruction unit assigned to the Marysville post of the
patrol went to the scene and collected physical evidence that indicated the vehicle involved
sustained front-end damage as a result of the crash.
The patrol later found the car believed to have struck the two men.
Troopers would not elaborate on any details about the driver. No one was charged in the
investigation Saturday.
