COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police said a mail carrier found an infant wrapped in a plastic bag on the city's east side on Saturday.

Mike Herron said he heard a baby crying in the 12-hundred block of Marble Drive, located near Livingston Avenue and Main Street, around 10 a.m.

Herron said he could see the baby's head sticking out of the trash bag, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

"You could see the umbilical cord," Herron said, "You could see the baby still had blood and vomit and fecal matter and it was just a mess, but you know, a beautiful baby girl."

Herron yelled for neighbors to call for help.

"We didn't know what to do," said Brian Doone, who lives nearby. "I went and got a wash cloth and we tried to wipe her face off a little bit."

Zandra Drugan stepped in to comfort the crying baby.

"I picked her up and held her. She started to calm down and not cry," Drugan told McEntyre.

Medics took the baby to Nationwide Children's Hospital. Police said the baby was in good condition.

Investigators searched the scene for clues about who the mother may be, McEntyre reported.

Franklin County Children Services and Columbus police will work together to find the child's parents and determine why the infant was abandoned.

Investigators called the infant 'Baby Samantha', McEntyre reported.

Franklin County Children Services said they will wait a few days to allow relatives to come forward and claim the child.

If no one comes forward, the baby will likely be placed in foster care, McEntyre reported.
