COLUMBUS, Ohio — The officers chased the robber into an alley and several shots were fired.

"The officers did see him with a gun. He was running and they got close enough to where there were shots fired and the suspect, right now we have to process that gun, see if he fired and how many times, but we know for a fact he fired on the lot," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

The suspected robber, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to Grant Medical Center where he died, 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.

Michael Carter, who lives nearby, told 10TV News that he heard the gunfire.

"I saw a bunch of policemen so I decided to go down and open my back door and I saw gunfire between many individuals, and there were at least 20-30 shots," Carter said.

The officers were not injured.

The intersection at Broad Street and James Road was closed while police conducted their investigation. It was expected to be closed for several hours, Bell reported.

Police said a suspected robber was shot and killed by officers on the city's east side Friday morning.

Investigators said James Anthony Hill Jr. robbed a person in the parking lot at a gas station, located at the corner of East Broad Street and James Road, at about 2:45 a.m., 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.

The robber fired a shot and two officers who were working special duty in the area heard it, investigators said.

"They saw an individual run from the gas station parking lot, run across the street and they saw him with a gun," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

The officers chased Hill into an alley and several shots were fired, police said.

"We have to process that gun, see if he fired and how many times, but we do know for a fact that he fired on the lot," Weiner said.

Hill, 30, was transported to Grant Medical Center where he died, Bell reported.

Michael Carter, who lives nearby, told 10TV News that he heard the gunfire.

"I saw a bunch of policemen so I decided to go down and open my back door and I saw gunfire between many individuals, and there were at least 20-30 shots," Carter said.

The officers were not injured.

Friday's shooting was the sixth police-involved shooting this year, Bell reported.

Jim Gilbert, of the Fraternal Order of Police, said the shooting appeared to be justified.

"The citizen ought to be very thankful that the police officers were here," Gilbert said. "The employee at the (gas station) was probably very thankful the officers were here, too."

The officers involved in the shooting, whose names were not immediately released, were placed on administrative duty while pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
