DELAWARE, Ohio — A woman who fled across the country after being accused of a cancer hoax is back in central Ohio.

Melanie Chen, who was captured by U.S. Marshals at a Utah motel, was in the Delaware County Jail awaiting a court hearing on Wednesday, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

She and her husband Phylip are both accused of fleecing friends and family by claiming Phylip was dying of cancer, and that they had no money to pay for his treatment.

Prosecutors say over a three year period, the Chens raked in $800,000 with the hoax, until the victims became suspicious, noticing that Phylip did not look sick.

Once authorities learned of the scam, they arrested Phylip, but Melanie disappeared. She was captured two weeks ago at a motel in Salt Lake City, and was transported back to Delaware County on Monday.

She faces charges of felony theft and receiving stolen property, and will face a judge on Wednesday.

Her husband Phylip is currently out on bond.

If convicted, they both face up to 10 years behind bars.
