COLUMBUS, Ohio — Outreach workers spent Thursday night trying to convince homeless men and women to come to shelters to escape below-zero temperatures.

Convincing the homeless to seek shelter is not an easy job, despite the dangerously cold weather, 10TV's Brittany Westbrook reported.

Brian Hall with Maryhaven spoke to Jay Battin and Michele Weber, who were camped out in local woods planning to sleep in sleeping bags next to a campfire.

"I hate to have her out here, but this is where we live," Battin said. "This is where we live."

Hall does not want it to be where they die.

"That would be the last thing we would hope, to find someone who didn't make it," Hall said.

Wednesday night, Franklin County's ten shelters held 105 families with children, 137 single women and 565 single men.

The community shelter board told 10TV News that's 37 percent over regular capacity, but no one is being turned away.

Hall eventually convinced Battin and Weber to take shelter for at least one night.

A few hours of safety, even if the couple will be back outside the following day.
