The former Ohio State defensive end told the court that he was a good man who made a bad decision.
The shootings occurred last April during a raid at a suspected East Rich Street crack house. Officer Tony Garrison was shot in the arm and undercover narcotics Officer John Gillis was wounded in the leg, 10TV News reported.
Foster admitted that he went to the house to gamble, and admitted that he brought his gun -- which he had a license to carry -- for self-defense.
Foster told investigators that he never heard officers identify themselves before initiating the raid. He said he fired two shots through a door because he thought robbers were trying to force their way inside.
During his sentencing, Foster offered an apology to the police officers who were wounded.
"I do apologize to the officers; I still respect law enforcement and I always have," Foster said. "Like I said, it was just an unfortunate situation. Just to let people know, my character will stay the same. I am a good person. I always have been."
After Friday's court proceedings, Garrison told 10TV News that he accepted Foster's apology.
"I think Mr. Foster was sincere," Garrison said. "I'm sure he made a terrible mistakebut sometimes mistakes have consequences and now he's dealing his consequences."
