NEWARK, Ohio — Police said a man broke into a house Monday night and threatened a 73-year-old man before stealing cash and credit cards.

It is the fourth home robbery in the area in as many weeks, and police said at least three of the crimes are connected, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

The latest robbery occurred Monday at about 9 p.m. at a home on Ridgefield Road. The victim's daughter told 10TV News that the man forced his way into the home and threw her father to the ground and threatened to kill him. Police said the man stole the victim's wallet, which contained about $200 and credit cards.

The victim described the robber as white, 20-28 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 160-170 pounds. Police believed the man rode a bicycle to the house.

Before committing the robberies, police said the robber cuts phone lines. The victims have all been 70-80 years old and have all given a similar description of the robber, 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.

Hours after the robbery Tuesday morning, William and Janet Burdette said they heard someone banging on their door. They heard four or five loud noises and got out of bed, but by the time they turned the lights on, the person was gone.

Police said the man attempted to cut the phone lines outside the house, but it turned out to be a cable that is connected to the thermostat, Bell reported.

"(I feel) violated, very much so," William Burdette said. "It's a shame the people in this neighborhood are getting invaded by these people that are doing these things. One day they'll be caught and we'll put an end to this."

The Burdettes said they believed the intruder rode a bike to their home because there were bike tracks in their front yard, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

Newark police were scheduled to hold a seminar titled "Crimes Against The Elderly" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Northside Baptist Church, located at 595 Goosepond Rd.

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call Newark police at 740-670-7201.
