COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police said a man was shot after he broke into a north side home Monday morning.

A woman and her husband were inside their home on East Weber Road when a man broke in at about 6:30 a.m., 10TV's Tino Ramos reported.

Police said the intruder beat the man inside the home with a pipe. The homeowner grabbed his gun and shot the man in the leg, Ramos reported.

The man was believed to have ran away from the scene.

Police put area hospitals on alert in case he seeks treatment for his injuries, Ramos reported.

The man is described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and was wearing a dark-colored coat.

According to a new law, the homeowner would be justified in using his gun to defend himself, Ramos reported. The Castle Doctrine shifts the burden of proof away from a homeowner who is trying to protect their home or person by firing at an intruder.
