SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The founder of Skybus is considering restarting operations in Springfield, 10TV News reported Friday.

John Weikle said he wants the city west of Columbus to become the dominant airport in the region.

Springfield leaders said they have had preliminary discussions with Weikle about Skybus coming to the city, 10TV News reported.

DISCUSSION: Skybus Considers Comeback

Weikle said the move would lure travelers away from airports in Columbus and Dayton.

The discount airline ended operations unexpectedly in April.

"Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier," read an announcement on the airline's Web site.
