COLUMBUS, Ohio — A decomposed body was found in the river near The Ohio State University campus Saturday afternoon.

A group of people were playing football near the Olentangy River, near Olentangy River Road and West Fifth Avenue, just after 1 p.m. when they discovered a body stuck debris along the river, 10TV's Brittany Westbrook reported.

Police said it appeared the body had floated down the river and became lodged in the debris.

"It appeared to be here several months," said Columbus police Detective Vincent Houpe.

Detectives spent hours collecting evidence before firefighters removed the body, Westbrook reported.

"At this point we don't know exactly if it was a homeless person or what we have right now," Houpe said. "Right now we are investigating a suspicious death."

Police hoped the coroner could help identify the body.
