HILLIARD, Ohio — Several dogs that were discovered earlier this week starving at a rural Perry County home were taken in by the Capital Area Humane Society on Thursday

When Perry County Humane Society Officer John Price first checked on the dogs last weekend, he said they had no food or water, but each dog had a secure collar and chain locking them to a dismal existence, 10TV's Brittany Westbrook reported.

"When I came out here Sunday it was bad enough," Price said. "It was bad enough that something had to be done, but I still had to leave them here."

Until he could locate the owner and have the dogs signed over to the humane society, Price could only bring food, water and straw to the animals.

The dogs were signed over to Price on Wednesday night, but the Perry County Humane Society had no facility to keep them, Westbrook reported.

That prompted the Capital Area Humane Society in Hilliard to step in and help the neglected dogs.

"We photograph each one and bring them back to Columbus and have a proper vet exam of each one," said Humane Society Officer Kerry Manion. "Then we work with rescue groups and the Humane Society to adopt out the animals."

Most of the dogs were skinny enough to reveal their fragile bones and ribs.

Others weren't so lucky.

More than a dozen other dogs were found dead at the property, Westbrook reported.

Veterinarian Dr. Mindy Holland was looking over the dogs that made the trip to Columbus on Thursday.

"These animals have suffered and they have suffered for more than several weeks probably," Holland said.

Ear infections, sores and malnourishment were among the ailments found during the examinations.

"He's in very thin condition, almost emaciated," Holland said while looking over one of the dogs.

Despite their hardship, most of the dogs were in high spirits after their arrival in Columbus.

"Even though total neglect and isolation they are still happy to see us," Holland said. "They have an incredible ability to forgive."
