COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 4 million school children in the United State have ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, 10TV's Tracy Townsend reported.

For many children medication is vital but it is only part of the treatment puzzle.

Sean Manley has ADHD and is one of about 60 children at his school with a learning disability.

The 8th grader said his medication helps him focus.

"It can be a disability in one way because I can't focus but an advantage in another 'cause you can think outside the box a lot," Manley said.

Doctors who treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder said structure in the classroom is vital and at home.

"Most children today are on medications that last through most of the day-- roughly until dinner time so for them getting homework done once they come home from school and before dinner is often part of structuring their day," said Dr. Daniel Coury.

Doctors recommend also include organization, prompts to keep kids on task and even checklists so they can follow their routines.

Along with medication, the strategies can help children conquer the challenges of ADHD.
