COLUMBUS, Ohio — A newly formed task force sent out an alert on Wednesday about bed bugs making an aggressive move into the Columbus area.

The bed bugs have been spotted in at least seven motels and apartments, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on mostly human blood.

Experts said that people should be vigilant about how careful are carrying the creatures to different places.

"Bed bugs can come if you've traveled," said Paul Wennings of the Franklin County Board of Health.  "They can come in your luggage if you buy something from a thrift store and you don't wash it, a piece of clothing."

Last month, a health official in Cincinnati warned that Columbus could get hit hard by bedbugs.

Some tips to keep bed bugs out of your home include caulking small spaces, especially between floors and wells.  Seal all light switch plates and other wall panels and, if possible, use metal bed frames, desks and bookcases.  Slick surfaces will help keep the bugs away.
