Parents Share Tips For Going Green

Jack Prenger's parents are no pushovers when it comes to making their home safe for their 16-month-old son. Before he was born, Heather and Greg Prenger drew on their healthcare training, 10TV's Andrea Cambern reported.
"Being in chiropractic school you learn about all the dangers of all the chemicals that you encounter in your everyday life," said Dr. Greg Prenger.
"When I became pregnant, I decided that I wanted to raise Jack in the most healthy and natural environment," Dr. Heather Prenger said.
They think most parents want the same for their children.
"I think they're just a little bit intimidated because when you think green, you think of the big projects," Greg Prenger said.
The couple started small. One of their first decisions involved diapers -- they chose cloth over paper.
"Cloth diapering is much easier than it used to be, there are so many options," Heather Prenger said.
A washable pad slides between a waterproof cover. Then the diaper closes with Velcro.
Heather Prenger buys organic food for her son, and makes her own baby food with a food processor. She makes enough to freeze for later use, Cambern reported.
"I know everything that he puts in his mouth and that makes me feel comfortable," Heather Prenger said.
While Jack's dishes are plastic, they contain no harmful chemicals. His toys are made of wood, not plastic and his parents find them online.
The Prengers also worried about cleaning products.
"If you go to the grocery store and you look at the cleaning products that you run into, absolutely every one of them says harmful if swallowed," Greg Prenger said. "I started thinking that we're going to put this on the floor, and he's going to crawl in it, and then his hand's going to end up right in his mouth."
Heather Prenger makes her own cleaning products.
The couple hopes all of their small changes will help Jack in the future.
"(We) just want him to be healthy and have the best start in life," Heather Prenger said.
