HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) — DeSoto County Schools has received a $500,000 grant from the state to fund nursing positions at two schools for the next five years.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1p87sIb ) the grant, through the State Department of Education's School Nurse Intervention program, will provide $50,000 a year for each of the next five years to fund nursing positions at Lewisburg and Hope Sullivan elementary schools.
School system spokeswoman Katherine Nelson says the $50,000 per year at each school will fully cover salary and benefits for the nurse at those schools.
Nelson said the ratio of nurses to students in the district, which is Mississippi's largest with more than 30,000 students, is one nurse per every 1,320 students.
