Police charge woman who claimed daughter was sick

ATLANTIC, Iowa (AP) — An Atlantic woman has been charged with child endangerment after police say she solicited money and widespread attention from the community by saying her 5-year-old daughter had terminal cancer when it turns out the girl isn't sick.

KCCI television reports (http://bit.ly/1llSJZs ) 30-year-old Leatha Kaye Slauson is in jail. An investigation began Thursday after police received a report of possible child abuse.

Atlantic police say the community rallied to help Riley Slauson enjoy what everyone believed was a life shortened by cancer. Fundraisers helped pay for a trip to Disney World and to ease the family's financial burden.

Police are asking people to stop donating to the Super Riley Fund.

The case has not yet been entered in court records and it's unclear whether Leatha Slauson has an attorney.
