Social services workers strike in southwest Ohio

CINCINNATI (AP) — Social service workers are on strike in a southwest Ohio county after contract talks over wages broke down with the county.

The union representing about 125 Butler County Children Services workers began picketing Monday outside the agency in Hamilton that serves about 450 foster children.

The union says fewer workers will have to do the work of about 100 case workers. The county says it has about 50 workers to help fill the gap.

A state fact finder recommended automatic step increases plus cost of living raises of 1.5 percent the first year, followed by 1.75 percent and 2 percent the next two years.

The county says its offer included lump sums payments of between $500 and $550 over three years.

The union says there must be some salary increase.
