Man suffers head injuries in Rhode Island crash

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — State police say a 57-year-old man has suffered head injuries after his motorcycle skidded out of control as he and another rider approached the downtown exit of the Pell Bridge.

The Providence Journal reports (bit.ly/1plMHaM) the motorcyclists were riding side-by-side when they apparently hit unexpected traffic in the eastbound lane. State Police Sgt. Brian Montminy says the two braked and then skidded. It happened around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

The Niantic, Connecticut, man with head injuries is in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital. The second motorcyclist, a 53-year-old Moosup, Connecticut, man is being treated for minor injuries.

State police say neither man was wearing a helmet. Their names are being withheld until their families are notified.
