Giffords in Maine ahead of midterm push on guns

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Gabby Giffords is stepping into the Maine governor's race this weekend to raise money for the Democratic hopeful as her team prepares a multi-state campaign on gun control to begin after Labor Day.

The Saturday appearance is among the former Arizona congresswoman's first steps into electoral politics this year.

It's putting Democrat Mike Michaud on the defensive, and it underscores the challenges Giffords is facing to make gun control an issue on which any politician is willing to campaign.

Giffords has become a leading face of gun politics since she was shot in the head in a 2011 attack in an Arizona parking lot that killed six people and left 13 wounded.
