Vet charged in robbery-slaying claims he has PTSD

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man charged with fatally shooting his aunt's fiance' while robbing the couple's home says he's an Afghanistan war veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Michael Lapaglia, of Sharpsburg, wasn't accompanied by an attorney when he was arraigned early Wednesday — his 23rd birthday — on charges of criminal homicide, burglary and robbery.

He was arrested Tuesday by Allegheny County police who say he shot 59-year-old John Parkes Jr. on July 21. The suspect's aunt found Parkes dead when she returned to their Kennedy Township home hours later.

Police say they were tipped off by a pawn shop where Michael Lapaglia allegedly tried to sell some stolen jewelry the day Parkes was killed, and that his aunt later identified some of the stolen items.

Lapaglia remains jailed without bond.
