Heart condition blamed for SW Iowa inmate's death

CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say an inmate died in a southwest Iowa county jail after experiencing a medical problem.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the incident happened Friday at the Page County Correctional Facility, where 58-year-old Jodie Blanche Taylor told another inmate she was having a medical problem. She collapsed moments later and sheriff's office staff rushed to her cell to attempt lifesaving measures.

Taylor was then taken to the Clarinda Regional Health Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The Page County Sheriff's Office asked the Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate. After interviews and an examination of evidence, the DCA found no signs of foul play.

On Saturday, an autopsy determined she died of natural causes due to a heart problem, called an aortic dissection.

Taylor was from Shenandoah.
