Authorities probe 2nd death at NY nursing home

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a second patient at a suburban nursing home.

Her attorney tells Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1qPaFh8 ) the 71-year-old woman died July 20 at Medford Multicare Center for Living.

A nursing home spokesman says she died after her ventilator malfunctioned.

He says the ventilator alarms went off at 3:46 p.m.; she was declared dead two minutes later after employees tried to resuscitate her.

The state health department says it's investigating and the attorney general's office has visited the facility.

Another patient died there in 2012. Nine employees were charged in June on charges including patient neglect and falsifying business records. Prosecutors say the 72-year-old woman died because she wasn't attached to her ventilator.

The nursing home said in a statement it's committed to providing the highest level of care.
