TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — We're learning more details about the execution of an Arizona death row inmate who took nearly two hours to die.
Documents show that executioners injected Joseph Rudolph Wood with 15 times the amount of a sedative and a painkiller that they originally intended to use.
Wood was finally pronounced dead after gasping more than 600 times while he lay on the table.
Wood's attorney says the dosage details show why an independent investigation by a non-governmental authority is necessary.
Wood's July 23 execution renewed debate over the death penalty and the effectiveness of lethal injection. It was the third execution to go awry in the U.S. this year.
