NYC uses food trucks to bring summer meals to kids

By

NEW YORK (AP) — Food trucks are a way of life in New York City. But not just for foodies looking to sample some new ethnic cuisine.

The city's Department of Education has turned to food trucks as part of its summer meals program. The program tries to make sure the children who qualify for reduced-price or free meals during the academic year don't lose out just because school's closed.

The department put its first truck in service a couple of years ago, and this year has four — one that goes to Orchard Beach in the Bronx and three that go to specific locations in Queens. That's in addition to all the permanent locations at sites including schools and soup kitchens.

Anti-hunger advocates say participation in meal programs drops in the summer.
