LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say eight people have been struck by lightning on Los Angeles' popular Venice Beach boardwalk, with a ninth person hit on Southern California's Catalina Island.
The strikes occurred as a series of thunderstorms, rare for Southern California, swept through the region Sunday.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main says eight people were hit Sunday on Ocean Front Walk in Venice. Ambulances were dispatched but there's no word on their conditions.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says the ninth person was struck on a golf course on Catalina Island. The 57-year-old man was reported in stable condition.
Authorities say the thunderstorms also sparked at least two small brush fires on the island that were quickly doused.
The unusual weather comes from monsoon moisture that's brought thunderstorms.
