Ohio woman won't be jailed for abandoning 2 kids

CLEVELAND (AP) — A judge has found a 31-year-old mother not guilty by reason of insanity on charges that she abandoned her two young children at a Cleveland homeless shelter in May.

That means Alisha Houston will go to live in a private residence monitored by a mental health agency and won't be punished with jail time.

Houston was charged child endangerment after police say she left her 1-year-old son and 3-week-old daughter at a shelter near downtown Cleveland May 28. She was arrested days later in suburban Columbus.

WOIO-TV (http://bit.ly/1rh1bqJ ) reports that a city judge agreed with psychological evaluations finding that Houston is mentally ill.

The mental health agency will develop a plan to ease her back into the community. Her children remain in foster care.
